Shibin Sheng: Pull Me out of the Mud: Negative Media Coverage and Customer Concentration

报告简介:

Although negative media coverage has been recognized as a critical external crisisthat shapes firms’ resource allocation and strategic change, it is unknown whether and how it affects firms’ customer portfolio choices, which represents a pivotal operation strategy. Drawing on the literature of customer portfolio management and crisis management, we propose that negative media coverage prompts firms to enhance customer concentration and this impact is contingent upon firms’ overseas market focus and organizational flexibility. Using panel data of listed firms in Chinese stock market, we show that negative media coverage is positively related to a firm’s subsequent customer concentration. In addition, this positive relationship is stronger when market demand uncertainty is high, but weaker for firms with strong export orientation and organizational flexibility (i.e., product innovation capability and process flexibility). Overall, our research identifies negative media coverage as a source of operations risks that can be tackled by customer concentration and boundary conditions of this strategic choice.

盛仕斌博士现任美国伯明翰阿拉巴马大学市场营销学教授。盛博士毕业于清华大学,后于美国弗吉尼亚理工大学获市场营销学博士学位。盛博士的研究领域集中于营销战略,战略管理,新兴经济体的制度环境等。他已经在市场营销和管理学的国际主流期刊上发表学术论文近50篇,包括Journal of Marketing,Journal of Operations Management, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science等期刊。盛博士已多次获国际学术会议最佳论文奖。盛博士目前是多家国际学术期刊的编审委员会成员。
